  1. Modern Japanese civilization was founded about 1600 BC and
  2. Buddhism was introduced in the 6th Century BC.  Feudalism
  3. dominated the country from 1191 when Shoguns (Military Dictators)
  4. dominated  until 1867.  In 1868 Emperor Meiji recovered a
  5. centralized system of government.  Portuguese and Dutch initiated
  6. minor trade with Japan in the 16th and 17th Centuries.  In a
  7. treaty with the United States in 1854, Commodore Matthew C. Perry
  8. opened Japan to U.S. trade and business.  In 1894 to '95, Japan
  9. fought China and gained control of Taiwan.  After war with Russia
  10. in 1904-05, Japan was forced to relinquish Sakhalin and give
  11. concessions to China.  In 1910 Japan annexed Korea.  In World War
  12. I, Japan took control of Shantung and other German Pacific
  13. islands.  Manchuria (Part of northeastern China) fell in 1931 and
  14. in 1932 full scale war with China broke out.  On December 7,
  15. 1941, Japan launched a raid against United States navy bases at
  16. Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and succeeded in bringing the United
  17. States into World War II.  Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945
  18. after two successful uses of the first atomic weapons.  A new
  19. constitution was drawn on May 3, 1947 and complete Japanese
  20. sovereignty was established on September 8, 1951.  During the
  21. next twenty years, Japan was returned all previously controlled
  22. Pacific islands and resumed diplomatic relations with all Pacific
  23. nations.  After World War II, Japan emerged as one the leaders of
  24. the economic and industrialized world.                    @
